What Should I Write About

You want to be a writer.

So, write.

But about what?

The multi-million-dollar-question. And there is no one answer that works for everybody. Because depending on who you ask you will get different answers.

Which leads to the only obvious answer: you need to find out for yourself.

But how am I going to do that?

Here are some clues.

Obviously something inside you compels you to write. There might be different reasons for that. If you’re doing it for fame and money, let me stop you right there. Stop reading this email, unsubscribe from this list, abandon your writing goals and choose a different profession.

Most writers don’t get famous nor rich (which of course also depends on your definition of richness).

So, what else is there to discover? Where does the fascination for writing come from? What intrigues you about it?

That’s what you need to find out. And it will lead you to the interesting stories that you can tell.

What we want to see on the screen or read in books are stories about the human condition. What stories to you have to tell about that?

What thoughts, emotions, experiences, fantasies do you have about the human connection that others can relate to? And how can you tell that in a dramatic way?

Start tapping into your own self. There was as writer (I don’t remember who it was) who said that every character you write comes out of some part of yourself. Because if that character is your creation, it is connected to who you are and how you see the world.

So, in order to see what great stories can come out of you, you need to look inside.

How to become better at looking inside yourself?
