Is David Lynch Right About Characters?

In his book about transcendental meditation David Lynch writes that you don’t need to feel what your characters feel. You can distance yourself from that.

Other opinions about your connection to your characters that I’ve come across.

No tears in the reader, no tears in the writer.

Or just recently, someone told me this one:

Every character you write comes from a place inside of you because that character comes from your brain. Try to find out what that connection is and write from that.

Bottom line?

There is no absolute truth, there is only your truth. Try out what works for you.

In your world, YOU are the decision maker, so you need to find out your own approach.
