How To Get Inspired To Write

There are many misconceptions about many things but among creative people the concept of inspiration is in the top 3 I believe.

What most people think is this:

Inspiration is something that sometimes – if you’re lucky – turns up all by itself and then you can create something amazing. But if you’re not inspired you cannot create.

As far as I’m concerned this is complete nonsense.

Inspiration has to do with a lot of things and in my experience (and what I know from other writers and creative people) most likely it can never be controlled 100%.

But you can learn to increase the odds to make inspiration happen immensely.

There are two very important sides to doing that:

1. Working, instead of waiting

2. Cleaning up in your life

What do I mean by that?

Let’s take a look at the first one.

There is a phrase from Michelangeno I think (although I’m not entirely sure if it was him) who said…

“Inspiration does exist but it needs to find you working.”

In my opinion there’s a lot of truth in that. It’s not about waiting for inspiration in oder you can get to work. It’s the other way round.

You need to work in order for inspiration to happen. Sit on your butt, move your fingers on the keyboard, and maybe inspiration will come all by itself if you stop thinking about it all the time if it will turn up .

Just concentrate on the page and don’t worry.

Now, the second part: cleaning up in your life.

I believe (and that comes from my own experience but I also noticed this with a lot of other writers and creators of some sort), the biggest roadblock for inspiration to happen has nothing to do with the writing itself. It’s all the rest that is going on in your life that INFLUENCES your writing.

Think about it for a second. If you have a lot of negativity going on, the moment you sit down to write, you won’t be able to shut it all out and be fully focused on your writing.

Also, if your life is full of distractions and your mind is racing all the time, worrying all the time, without breaks and time off for yourself, your mind won’t be able to process your writing and won’t produce great ideas.

Then what the heck is the solution to all this?

First of all, there is no one-fits-all solution. But there are techniques that you can learn, that will lead to making the mind switch, so you can see what are the things in your life that are constantly blocking out your creative juices.

And many people are struggling with the same kinds of problems in that regards, so, yes, there are many solutions and approaches that work for many writers and help them become better.

And happier people also, by the way, because this goes hand in hand.

One more thing: going on the journey to find your inspiration is not one thing that you do and then once, BOOOM, inspiration hits you, you will be super creative and successful over night from that point on.

Doesn’t work that way.

It’s a process, a series of steps.

But the beauty of it is: once your’e on the way, you will have insight after insight, you will become better, more self-assured about yourself and what you can do, and every day will be a lot sweeter than before.

What helps you go through the process step by step?
